Lexus has officially unveiled the all-new GX 550, bringing the iconic nameplate to Australia for the first time. Aimed at 4x4 enthusiasts and luxury seekers alike, this SUV strikes a balance between rugged off-road performance and refined on-road luxury. With three models to choose from—Luxury, Overtrail, and Sports Luxury—the GX 550 is ready to take on Australia’s toughest terrains, and we're particularly excited about the Overtrail variant.
Why Lexus’ New Colour Has Us Green with Envy
The Overtrail can be specced in several unique colours, but the one that has really caught our eye is Khaki Metal. This earthy, rugged hue is remarkably similar to the Nori Green we’ve previously used on our 79 Series and 200 Series, bringing back fond memories of those builds.
Off-Road Performance: Overtrail Takes Centre Stage
While all models in the GX lineup feature Lexus’ renowned luxury, it's the Overtrail model that stands out for off-road enthusiasts. Designed to tackle challenging terrains, this five-seater aims at maximizing off-road capability. Coming from factory with all-terrain Toyo tires, the Overtrail is equipped for more than just the school run.
The inclusion of eKDSS in the Overtrail, a first for Lexus, allows the front and rear stabilizer bars to engage or disengage automatically, providing increased traction and comfort when you're navigating tough terrain. Additional off-road features include Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, and a rear electronic locking differential, ensuring that the Overtrail model doesn’t just look tough—it is tough.
V8s Are History, and the 2024 Prado’s Got Competition
Under the hood, the GX 550 is powered by a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, delivering 260kW of power and 650Nm of torque. Coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive, this SUV has the grunt to handle both on-road cruising and off-road adventures.
But for towing fans, there's some news: the GX 550 offers 3,500kg of braked towing capacity on the Overtrail and Luxury models. While this isn’t class-leading (the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and most Utes can handle 3,500kg), it’s respectable for a luxury SUV. The Sports Luxury model, however, offers slightly less at 3,130kg.
Luxurious Yet Utilitarian: A Cabin for All Occasions
Stepping inside the GX 550, it's clear Lexus hasn’t compromised on luxury. The cabin is packed with premium features like Ultrasuede accents, a cooled box for beverages, and a 14-inch multimedia display that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
With the GX 550, Lexus offers an intriguing new option for Aussie off-roaders and luxury SUV buyers. The Overtrail model appeals to those of us who want a more refined off-road experience without sacrificing capability. While it may not tow as much as some American trucks like the Ford F-350, and its high-tech interior might not appeal to those hardcore old-school 70 series owners, the GX 550 promises to carve out its own niche in the Australian 4x4 market.
Whether you're drawn in by the rugged performance of the Overtrail or the luxury trimmings of the Sports Luxury, one thing is clear: the Lexus GX 550 is set to make waves when it hits Australian roads. And with Khaki Metal as an option, it’s sure to turn a few heads while doing so.
